Anaesthetic training is based on a modular system and includes time spent doing blocks of neuro, craniofacial, ear nose and throat (ENT), plastics and general surgery. There are many weekly departmental meetings to attend. The clinical and didactic education curriculum includes pediatric pain management and perioperative anesthetic care for neonates, infants, children and adolescents both in the operating room and in satellite locations. A dedicated fellow teaching program has been designed to aid in the transition from trainee to consultant. Due to the constraints of the health care system in South Africa these are voluntary positions and do not attract a salary. Submission of research findings to national and international anaesthesia meetings is encouraged and supported.
